Man banned from keeping pets after making dog ‘fight badgers’

Anthony Campbell was disqualified from keeping all animals for life

A man was banned from keeping pets after his dog was found with facial injuries and had not been taken to the vet for treatment.

Anthony Campbell’s, 39, of Bank Street, Newton-le-Willows, Patterdale Terrier Millie was found with scarring and facial injuries and her owner told RSPCA inspectors she had not been taken to a vet for any treatment or pain relief.

RSPCA officers joined Merseyside Police who executed a warrant, under the Protection of Badgers Act, at the address in Newton-le-Willows on November 13 last year.

At the property, RSPCA inspectors Anthony Joynes and Andrew Harris found four dogs, including a female chocolate-coloured terrier called Millie.

Inspector Joynes said he found Millie had extensive scarring to her face, chin, lower jaw, neck and front legs.

In his court witness statement, Inspector Joynes said: “Millie was very nervous in demeanour but also friendly and showed no aggression. I noted that she had extensive scarring to her face, chin, lower jaw, neck and front legs.

“I observed some ulceration to the lower lip and could see and feel the final remnants of scabs on and around the scarred area suggesting that wounds had been present up until recently.”

Officers were told Millie had not seen a vet and Campbell claimed she was bitten by another dog while they were out ratting.

He said she’d had some antibiotics but couldn’t say who had treated her wounds.

Police seized Millie and she was placed in RSPCA care.

A member of the RSPCA’s Special Operations Unit – the charity’s specialist team responsible for investigating serious and organised animal crime, including badger baiting and wildlife crimes – assessed Millie’s injuries and said, in his statement: “The dog was exhibiting injuries to its lower jaw and forelegs.

“These injuries suggested to me that the dog had been in close combative contact with a badger in the recent past. The lower jaw injury was, in my opinion, typical of those inflicted by badgers.”

An independent vet also said that Millie had “degloving injuries” which are injuries where a large piece of skin and the layer of soft tissue right under it partially or completely rip from the body.

The independent vet who also assessed Millie’s injuries, concluded, in his report: “Concerns were raised for the female chocolate Patterdale type dog due to the presence of extensive scarring to her face, chin, lower jaw, neck and front legs.

“Although degloving injuries are more commonly encountered when a dog fights with a badger, this type of injury is not exclusive to this mechanism and it cannot be stated with surety that a fight with a badger definitively occurred when considering the degloving injury alone.

“None-the-less a degloving injury of the chin is a very painful event irrespective of its cause and requires timely and appropriate veterinary treatment in the form of pain relief such as a combination of… drugs.”

The vet determined that Millie had suffered pain for at least three days, possibly longer, due to a lack of veterinary treatment for her facial injuries.

Millie remained in RSPCA care while the investigation was ongoing but will now look for a loving new home.

Campbell was sentenced at Wigan Magistrates’ Court on December 16 and had previously pleaded guilty to cause unnecessary suffering to a protected animal on November 13, 2020.

He was sentenced to a community order including an eight-week curfew and was ordered to pay £750 in costs and a victim surcharge. He was also disqualified from keeping all animals for life.
