Terrence Williams, known as Gandy at the Grafton Hunt, is a follower and one-time servant of the Grafton. He attends most of its meets and, on every occasion, threatens citizens who monitor the hunt and often assaults them by barging. During the previous season, he told an 80-year-old lady monitor, ‘I’m going to bash your head in and break your nose’ after the lady showed concern for Gandy’s dog in his car.
On 11th January 2020, five citizens, determined to secure evidence of illegal hunting, were monitoring the Grafton Hunt. They found the hunt on the dismantled railway that runs under the Banbury Lane near Sulgrave. Hunt followers were on the bridge which is high over the dismantled railway. Monitor Lawrence was quietly filming over the parapet looking down to where the hounds were casting about, watched by the huntsman and riders. Gandy approached Lawrence and spoke to him as follows:
‘Don’t start that game on me or you’ll be over that bridge and I ain’t going to hesitate, I tell you.’
‘You are going to get a fucker one of these days and I ain’t arguing with you. I’ll tell you because I’ll fucking slap you down. I’ll have the fucking police out to you – doing what you’re fucking doing.’
Gandy, a big man, then assaulted Lawrence by barging into him. Lawrence ignored the assault as his job is to film crime-scenes and the hunt and hounds were near where a fox could break cover at any second.
The hounds then appeared just inside a field by the bridge. Another monitor was filming the scene and Gandy stormed towards him in an aggressive manner as if to assault him. Lawrence went to the other monitor’s assistance whereupon Gandy punched Lawrence in the face while he was filming the scene both on his hand-held and chest-mounted cameras.
Terrence Williams was charged with assault by beating and after two court appearances pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to a £40 fine for the assault, payment of £117 in costs and surcharge and ordered to pay Lawrence £50 in compensation.
This is yet one more conviction of hunt thugs who try to stop law-abiding citizens
