Well done Judy

FORMER nightclub singer Judi Hewitt has “come out of retirement” to record an anti-hunting song which she hopes will tip the balance in the General Election.

The veteran animal rights campaigner from Rhyl, who once performed on the same bill as the legendary Johnny Cash, is to post the song on YouTube.

The final mix of “Judi’s Song”, written by musician friend Roger Burke and based on one of her poems, was put together on Tuesday night at a recording studio in Penmaenmawr.

It’s due on-line in the next few days, set to a video featuring images of foxes.

“I’m my own biggest critic and when I first listened to the song I was all prepared to put my fingers in my ears,” said Judi, founder of Wales Against Animal Cruelty.

“But it choked me up. It was the hardest song I’ve ever sung.”

The song, which may be aired in a multi-act Viva! concert later this year, is the final gesture in a personal General Election campaign which began last summer.

It’s been a hectic, frenzied time – but Judi is driven by a fear that a new government will attempt to repeal the Hunting Act, which in 2005 brought about a ban on hunting with hounds.

“I cannot bear to think of it being over-turned – it would mean the last 20 years of my life had gone down the drain,” she said.

After printing some 6,000 leaflets at home, Judi ordered a further 10,000 at a cost of £600 and she is still trying to deliver them all. Some 4,000 are left and, despite help from half-a-dozen volunteers, Judi does many of the doordrops herself.

Since the turn of the year she’s stood in countless town centres but says shoppers are too pre-occupied to listen to the message.

On a good day Judi might shift 200 leaflets in the high street, half of which are thrust into coat pockets and never read. In contrast she can deliver 100 leaflets-an-hour door-to-door, and claims she finds a more receptive audience.

“I’ve approached one or two people in their gardens and, when they’ve read the leaflets and seen the images, they’re genuinely shocked,” she said.

“I delivered a few in the Wrexham area but stopped because it’s Labour heartland. Now I’m focusing more on marginal seats.

“Hunting is a vote loser and I genuinely believe that if Labour scrape through, our campaigning will have helped tip the scales.”
